Dr. Catherine Juillard
Co-founder and Executive Director of Second Assist

Dr. Juillard is currently Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, where she practices at San Francisco General Hospital as a trauma surgeon and intensive care physician. She is also co-Director of the Center for Global Surgical Studies at UCSF. Her interest in public health began when she was a Peace Corps Volunteer for three years in Senegal, West Africa, where she trained rural community health workers. Dr. Juillard completed a residency in general surgery at UCLA Medical Center and a fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at UCSF-San Francisco General Hospital. She received her Masters degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, where she was awarded the Sommer Scholarship, a full, merit-based scholarship intended for "future leaders of public health." Dr. Juillard received her M.D. from UCLA and an A.B. in English Literature from Stanford University, where she was a member and co-captain of Stanford's two-time NCAA champion volleyball team.
Tony Cardoza

Tony has over 20 years of business experience growing organizations and developing multi-use development projects in urban centers across the United States. He currently is a Managing Director at CityView, a leading investment firm focused on urban growth. His focus at Second Assist is on helping to further develop organizational structure and strategy. He holds a B.A in Economics from Middlebury College and an M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.
Maureen McLaren

Maureen brings deep experience in education and technology to the board of Second Assist. Maureen has held leadership positions at several leading firms building out eLearning programs, including McKinsey & Company. She currently works at Cornerstone OnDemand and is focused on providing talent management software and services to schools and education organizations to help recruit, develop, and retain great leaders in the public and non-profit sectors. A former teammate of Catherine Juillard and Anne Wicks on the national championship Stanford women's volleyball team, Maureen holds both Bachelors and Masters degrees from Stanford University. She holds an NCAA record six national championships as a student-athlete (volleyball and swimming).
Anne Wicks

Anne brings 15 years of philanthropy and non-profit management experience to the board of Second Assist, working with organizations including Stanford University, the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health, Teach for America and American Public Media. She is currently the Associate Dean for External Relations at the USC Rossier School of Education. She holds a B.A in American Studies and a M.A. in Education from Stanford University as well as an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California. A former captain of Stanford's women's volleyball team, Anne was part of three national championship teams, two as a player and one as an assistant coach.
Dr. Kent A. Stevens

Dr. Kent A. Stevens is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery, Division of Acute Care Surgery: Trauma, Critical Care, Emergency and General Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and is the Associate Director for Trauma and Clinical Services in the International Injury Research Unit. Dr. Stevens received his Medical Degree from the University of Arizona, where he also completed a General Surgery Residency. He completed his fellowship training in Trauma/Surgical Critical Care at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Additionally, Dr. Stevens holds an MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research interests are in injury prevention, trauma systems, and trauma outcomes, particularly as they apply to the developing world.
